Vision Problem or Learning Disability
Our Yakima optometrist wants you to know that sometimes, children experience difficulty learning in the classroom because of problems with their vision. As a parent, you want your child to get the most effective use out of time spent in the classroom as well as when doing homework. Sometimes, children experience difficulty learning in the classroom because of problems with their vision. If you suspect your child may have a learning disability, one important thing you should check first is to see if they have any issues with their vision that could be impacting their learning. Vision problems that impact school performance often are successfully treated with vision therapy which is available in the greater Kennewick and Yakima areas.
Vision Problems Affecting Learning
For instance many children who have slow hesitant reading or skip words on a page do so because their eyes do not have the ability to track from one word to the other quickly and accurately. Children can also be very avoidant of reading or school work because doing so gives them a headache due to eye strain. This avoidant behavior can often be mistaken for lack of ability to focus on their work. Difficulty with eye focusing can cause a child to have doubling or blurring vision when they read causing mistakes and difficulty learning to read. Finally, children can have problems processing the information they are seeing. This can cause problems with letter reversals, remembering words they just read, or reading comprehension.
